She was a wise mare.
She arrived to the sanctuary from a kill pen in 2015 - a beautiful stout red dun Quarter Horse. Her registration papers even made the haul.
She was 19 years old at the time. We guessed she had been a brood mare - she was a quiet herd boss. Always schooling the younger ones when they were out of line.
You had to earn her trust. She had seen the miles and definitely had some baggage. But she was willing to open up to us, to let us halter her, lead her to and from the barn, and trim her hooves. It took time, but she softened.
She was usually with her neck over the gate at day break waiting to come in for breakfast.
Thankfully her last few years on Earth were pleasant. She knew love, and had all of her herd members standing over as she left.
She was very special to us and will be missed....
Run free sweet Sara.
